Scouting Today In High Legh

2005

Scouting returns to High Legh with the formation of a Beaver colony in September 2005.

It had begun with a telephone conversation between Martin Relton and Adam Croft, then head teacher of High Legh School, who was very positive about the idea. Martin had already identified High Legh as having the potential for a new group and outlined the plans at the district AGM in May 2005.

Martin ran a stand at the school summer fair on 17th July 2005, helped by Nicky Harris (at the time a cub leader at 1st Knutsford, now GSL). At the fair Martin met Jan Lancaster who offered to help out. She brought Collete and Duncan to the District Beaver family camp in Aug 2005.

Martin also took a school assembly one Tuesday morning with Debbie Phillips (Asst County Commissioner Beavers) to talk about Scouts to the school children.

So Beavers opens with about 9 Beavers and Martin Relton, Trudy Beech, Jan Lancaster and Emily Johnson helping, joined later by Jenny Hickson.

In October / November 2005 Richard Greenwood and Paul Bates come forward as Beaver leaders, Richard as leader and Paul his assistant. It isn’t long before Jenny Greenwood joins the growing Beaver colony as an assistant leader with Trudy.

2006

With the Beavers established, Cubs follows in April 2006 with Martin Jones, Jan Lancaster and Alan Johnson. Paul Bates moves up from Beavers in September 2006 as Cubs leader.

2007

Beavers attend Centenary Camp summer 2007 with Richard getting very little sleep!

In April 2007 Jenny takes part in the Cheshire Hike, achieving a tremendous first place in the senior plus.

2009

Richard & Jenny Greenwood leave Beavers, while Alan Johnson and Jan Lancaster leave Cubs; they are all greatly missed, having contributed in so many ways to the success of the Scout sections in High Legh, and their hard work will be gratefully remembered.

New leaders for the Cubs: Alison Kirby and Grant Thompson, helped by Johnny Allatt.

Paul Bates moves into an unofficial role as Group Scout Leader, the High Legh group being a satellite of 1st Knutsford.

Trudy Beech leaves High Legh Beavers, having been a driving force from the earliest days; her departure is a great loss but her legacy continues in the knowledge and experience she brought to the group and its leaders.

Enthusiastic new leaders to take the Beavers forward: Eddie Taylor and Miranda Taylor.

2010

Having kept Cubs going for nearly two years Grant Thomson and Johnny Allatt leave Cubs, with heartfelt thanks.

Meanwhile the Beavers attend a camp at Dunham - take a look at the pictures.

Following Grant’s departure, Julia Sanderson brings her wealth of experience to High Legh Cubs as she leads them from Easter until the end of the school year.
