Mike Hosker 7th Knutsford Passed GSL/Commissioner training
On Friday evening 23 June hundreds of Knutsford Cub Scouts threw themselves into the long jump at the District Cub Sports; for nearly two hours small bodies were landing all ways up in the sand-pit before darting off to run in the 50 metre, 200 metre or some other event. The final places were:
1st 7th Knutsford (High Legh)
2nd 5th Knutsford (Tigers)
3rd 1st Knutsford
At the 7th Knutsford`s AGM, Brian Greenhalgh who had been Chairman for very many years retired and his place was taken by Martin Pound, who then recommended his unsuspecting wife as honorary secretary; fortunately she agreed. The honorary treasurer Pat Crompton also stepped down, her place being taken by Stuart Maun, the secretary commenting that thus the group accounts had been handed "from one reliable guardian
angel to another!" At the end of the year (1 December) the 7th were in the news again when the Scout swimming gala was held, for they swept the board, taking the Junior, Senior and Overall trophies. For some reason the High Legh boys seem to have a penchant for winning swimming galas for it may be remembered that the 7th Cubs won
The District event three years in succession (1978-80) despite the fact that they are
Some 25 miles from the sea (and the Mersey Bar at that) and that there are no swimming baths in their vicinity.

1990

Over the two days 7-8 April the Cheshire Hike took place with approximately 150 teams in each of the three sections; Scouts from all over the county took part. From Knutsford there were 14 teams, all completing the course. As the boys know this is not a week-end stroll but quite an arduous two days. This time the overnight temperature dropped to -7C.
The Knutsford District trophies went to:
Juniors Peter Critchley and Kevin Jackson 7th Knutsford
Intermediate Chris Aston and Ben Young 6th Knutsford (8th in County)
Senior Ben and Pat Bramich 5th Knutsford
One of the main events of the year was undoubtedly 'Chamboree 90' (Cheshire Jamboree) an international camp for Scouts held in Tatton Park, Knutsford, 1-8 August and organised by the Cheshire County Scout Council. Chamboree 90 was opened by the new President Bill Bromley-Davenport, his first duty as President. Knutsford District was well and truly involved of course. Some 2400 Scouts and 600 leaders camped in glorious weather. There were eight sub-camps all named after famous county towns; ADC (Scouts) Dave Metcalfe was the sub-camp leader for 'Nottingham', his deputy being Shirley Baston GSL 2nd Knutsford. Nottingham sub-camp accommodated Scouts from thirteen groups in Cheshire, one group from Bolton, one from Condor (Derbyshire) and three from overseas - Kerry (Eire), Norway and Reutlingen (Germany). The 2nd and 7th Knutsfords camped in 'Canterbury', the 6th in 'Lancaster', the 5th in 'Lincoln', and the 1st in 'York'. Boys from sixteen foreign countries came - Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Eire, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary (these Scouts had been underground for two years),

Italy, Norway, Poland, Republic of China (Taiwan), Spain, Switzerland, USA and the USSR. The boys from the USSR were not yet Scouts proper but were from a Russian youth movement Pioneers and who showed "unforgettable wonderment in their eyes when they went into the camp's Safeway supermarket during the morning after their arrival." Incidentally, it is recorded that Safeways sold at least 10,000 litres of bottled water, 10,000 pints of milk, thousands of loaves; and on the Sunday of the Chamboree they had to strip the shelves of bacon and sausages at the stores in Altrincham, Chorlton, Hale and Wilmslow to meet the camp demands.
There was certainly no excuse for having nothing to do!
Nine thousand doughnuts were sold on the 'Village Green' and nine miles of sisal were used to mark out the site. Apart from those already mentioned very many leaders, Venture Scouts, Rangers, parents and friends from Knutsford gave their time and help including District Commissioner Derrick Roberts and his wife Joyce in charge of the souvenir shop, Biff and Joan Smith and Dave Ross in charge of ceremonies and Oliver Evans in charge of off-site visits and Chris Sampson as the interpreter. On Saturday morning Chief Scout Garth Morrison visited the camp and spent the whole morning inspecting and talking to groups. On the Monday the camp was visited by our District President Councillor Bert Grange (accompanied by the District Chairman) and was given a splendid tour with commentary by Dave Metcalfe. The range of activities , both on-site and off-site, was breath-taking, so much so that a book could be written about them.

1991

Shortly after the gang show there was a District practice week-end hike by 36 Scouts and eight leaders in preparation for the Cheshire Hike on 23 March. For the Cheshire Hike over 300 teams (two boys each), including nine Knutsford teams, took part. All the Knutsford boys completed this tough and demanding event. The District winners were:

Junior Matthew Pound and Paul Taylor 7th Knutsford
Intermediate D Melling and B Wharfe 5th Knutsford Senior Chris Ashton and Ben Young 6th Knutsford

1995

Peter Barnwell, Scout Leader of the 7th Knutsford (High Legh) reports that during the middle of the year the troop "has been busy building hot-air balloons with limited success". How big they were or what they did with them is not recorded and it is suggested that the reader uses his/her imagination!

1997

District Commissioner Dave Metcalfe reported that the 7th Knutsford (High Legh) were in difficulty as there were only five Scouts; also parental support was poor. He had suggested that the remaining boys join the group at Lymm (Warrington East District). Dave Ross was to be ADC (Leader Training). The 2nd Knutsford headquarters refurbishment was nearly complete. GSL Garry Davies was retiring but Messrs. Hoskins and Smallwood had agreed to stay for another 12 months.
